About this experience
Not many people know the real history of medieval Madrid: much has been lost, burned or simply destroyed. As a result, there is a main, popular version of the origin of this or that monument, or event, it is this version that is told as the only true one. But in reality, there may be several interpretations and they, of course, contradict each other. I will help you to discover the most interesting of them and form your own impression of the city.
Program
I will show you the most famous places in Madrid and tell you about the unusual intricacies of their official history, as well as curious facts from alternative sources. We will walk through the old part of the city of the Habsburg dynasty, and end the route with the inspection of sights that were built during the rule of the Bourbons.
For example, the main version of the origin of Madrid's symbol "The Bear and the Strawberry Tree": there were many forests in the outskirts where bears roamed and loved to feast on strawberries. But did the brown bears actually live in the suburbs of the capital? I will share with you two more interesting versions and tell you which one is close to me.
Equally interesting from this point of view is the ambiguous in its design Almudena Cathedral, where in addition to Catholic symbols there are frescoes in the Orthodox style and stained glass windows of a completely unexpected design, and even the Main Square or Plaza Mayor was not exclusively a place for parades and announcements of royal will. Thanks to this approach to history, a sightseeing walk will turn into a real adventure for you, full of unexpected details and contradictions. Never stop being amazed!
