About this experience
Sigulda is a must-visit on the tourist map. However, few people know that just 40 km from Livonian Switzerland (as romantically called Sigulda) are the luxurious ruins of the once formidable Venden Castle, celebrated by Bestuzhev-Marlinsky in the eponymous story. I suggest combining two trips into one and, enjoying the wonderful landscapes of the Gauja River valley, heading to the castle of the Livonian Order Master.
Program
During the Sigulda tour, you will see:
- the famous medieval Turaida Castle, now home to a museum-reserve;
- the picturesque park "Gauja Hill" and the grave of the proud "Turaida Rose";
- the majestic ruins of the Segewold knight's castle, offering stunning views of the river valley and Turaida;
- the new Sigulda Castle – the residence of the Kropotkin princes;
- Gutman's cave and the charming "Bundulitis."
But the Gauja National Park is not limited to Sigulda. It's time to head to Cesis!
The charming provincial town of Cesis emerged under the shadow of the once most powerful castle of the Livonian Order — Venden fortress. Despite the grim times, the castle has retained its grandeur. Next to the old castle is a new one with a tall tower proudly flying the flag of Latvia. By the way, it hails from Cesis! Here, there is an abundance of sights. Every house is a legend, every hill is history!
Princess' House, the well monument, the hunchback lamplighter — Cesis' "eternal grandfather", black swans — these are not all the symbols of the city. The mysterious Vendian people, the Livonian Order masters, Ivan the Terrible, the glorious Sievers family — all of them are inscribed in the pages of the city's history.
