About this experience
Crusaders, monks, alchemists, free masons - all these orders and secret societies have left interesting (but not always noticeable to the uninitiated) signs on our buildings. We will visit the mysterious medieval churches of Riga, including the Cathedral, and I will help you unravel the secrets and symbols they have preserved to this day.
Program
- We will start in the old quarter, where the first center of medieval Riga was located. Nowadays, near St. Peter's Church, Bremen musicians perform wishes and sell souvenirs, but once serious passions were seething here.
- Taking a peek into a short narrow street, we will try to find traces of long-gone years. I will tell you about the most famous dungeons of Riga and life in the monasteriеs. We will find a well-preserved section of a real fortress wall.
- The second part of the tour will take place in one of the oldest buildings in our city - the Cathedral, which has absorbed the spirit of eight centuries. Upon entering the temple, you immediately understand that Gothic is light, incorporeality, and the eternal aspiration of the human soul upwards. Sunbeams penetrate inside through lace windows adorned with colorful stained glass, and in the altar part, a six-petal rose blooms. The walls of the cathedral are decorated with heraldic crests of noble families and guilds. Here you can find the crest of the Benkendorf family, the Chernogolovy family, and the well-preserved stone epitaph of the famous Tizengauzen family.
I will tell you:
- what secrets this ancient temple holds;
- what legends the old-timers tell about the treasure keepers of the cathedral;
- why a "fossilized" small lace grid mouse;
- what the Chapter Hall and the Cross Gallery of the Cathedral Monastery are famous for;
- what is the secret of the famous organ's "spirituality."
I hope that after this tour, in your memories, as with Nicholas Roerich, Riga will remain "primarily, spiritualized by a majestic cathedral."
