You will get acquainted with the rich and diverse history of the ancient Livonians who settled on the banks of Daugava. Learn about the close connection between the ancient Balts, who built many wooden fortresses here, and the history of the ancient Rusichs, discover the similarity of traditions and the former way of life. I will also tell you about the important trade route that passed through Daugava, the influence of Polotsk princes, and the Crusade.
Wooden Castle in Koknese
In one of the oldest settlements in the country, you will visit a real wooden castle of the ancient Livonians created by enthusiasts. Explore the ruins of the archbishop's castle around which the town originated, learn about the fame of Koknese and its connection to the Russian princes. During the walk, I will also tell you about where the Dominican monks fled from the Reformation.
In the Footsteps of the Latvian Epic in Lielvarde
Folk tales and legends that formed the basis of the main Latvian epic 'Lāčplēsis' will be the leitmotif of the walk in Lielvarde. Stories about the creation of Latvian mountains, valleys, and rivers, about fairies and witches, mysterious castles, folk heroes, and cruel enemies will help you delve into ancient times and connect with the roots of Latvian national identity. In the town, you can visit the museum of the author of the epic, Andrejs Pumpurs. I will also show you the places where, according to legend, women can rid themselves of their dark forces, Lāčplēsis' stone bed, the sanctuary of ancient gods, ruins of an ancient bishop's castle, and the wooden castle of the ancient Balts. Additionally, you will hear an interesting story about the magical Lielvarde belt.
