About this experience
This tour is for lovers of the Middle Ages and nature enthusiasts: the extraordinary landscape of the valley, miraculously preserved ruins of medieval castles, and of course, legends about fierce knights, brave leaders of local tribes, and majestic priests. We will ascend steep stairs, descend narrow paths, climb on ruins, and absorb the spirit of antiquity.
Program
- Romantics will enjoy the gray legends of Livonian Switzerland about the horse of fate, Turaida Rose, and bricked in the old church, botany lovers will be amazed by the diversity of local nature, residents tired of big cities will get a long-awaited breath of air on Mount Daun, and history buffs will discover many interesting pages of Latvia's past.
- You will learn where and how medieval knights and monks lived, how the system of castles of Old Livonia developed, how the Turaida castle expanded and strengthened from the 13th to the 17th century, and also who is to blame for it turning into picturesque ruins.
- In addition to the romantic ruins of the Archbishop's Turaida Castle, I will show you the largest cave in Latvia, where there is a trail to the source of the good spirit, which restores youth and strength. It is also worth looking at the river valley from the height of the watchtower or taking a ride on the cable car.
- We will also visit the museum of the castle's history, where I will show you a map of the Livonian state, relics found during archaeological excavations, and tell you about the quirks of the monks.
