About this experience
Akko, Acre, Agra - an ancient city that defied Napoleon Bonaparte, will tell its story. Little has changed here since the Turkish rule in Palestine - walking the streets of Ptolemais, where Apostle Paul walked, the Crusaders' fortress remembering King Richard, you will feel like you've been transported back in time.
What to Expect
The Old City
When the Ottoman Empire captured Akko, it was decided not to destroy the buildings, but to bury them in sand, allowing us to see the city as Richard the Lionheart saw it. We will start our acquaintance with Akko at the Land Gate, the only entrance to the city until 1931. By the fortress walls, I will tell you why Napoleon's dreams did not come true, and then I will lead you to the water system created under El Jazzar. I will help you understand the differences between the Templars, Hospitallers, and Teutonic Knights, show you the Venetian quarter and pavilions illustrating the life of the Crusaders, and the Turkish khans - guest houses - will tell you about the later period of Akko.
The 'Pasha's Mosque'
The El Jazzar Mosque will impress you with its decoration and size. It is the largest mosque outside Jerusalem in the country and the largest mosque built in Palestine during the time of Turkish rule. The city's symbol holds many amazing stories, as well as an important relic - a hair from the beard of the Prophet Muhammad.
Secret Tunnel
Through the 'Knights' Halls,' we will head to the Templar Quarter, where a drainage system has been operating since 1200. Discussing the findings of archaeologists who excavated here in various years, we will emerge through an underground tunnel to the Mediterranean Sea. Once on the surface, you will find yourself by the western part of the fortress wall. Here stand the Byzantine and Greek Catholic churches, about which I will share interesting facts.
Gifts of the Sea
Lastly, we will admire the view of the central Marina port and discuss the cunning of the local reefs, the secret of the clear lagoon, and historical sea routes. And at the traditional Arab bazaar, you will be treated to local delicacies: fresh fish, shrimp, squid. I will explain why Eastern sweets include chili and spicy spices, suggest what to try, and after a round, I will lead you back to the Land Gate.
