About this experience
Old City Baku is a labyrinth of unique alleys where it's impossible to get lost. During the walk, I will be your guide to the world of stories, mysteries, and legends of the fortress of Icheri Sheher. You will see the Maiden Tower, Shirvanshahs' Palace, visit the caravanserai, and artist's workshop. But most importantly, you will immerse yourself in the atmosphere of Baku and feel its heartbeat.
Back in 2020, during the pandemic, this tour was conducted online and was warmly welcomed by virtual travelers. That's why we decided to give it a second life - but this time in a live walking tour format with a guide!
What to Expect
Baku Symbols: from palaces to bazaars. Discover the legends and architectural intricacies of the Maiden Tower, the tragic history of Ismailiyya Palace, the chronicles of Shirvanshahs' Palace, and the amazing eastern colors of the bazaar square.
Narrow streets of Icheri Sheher. In the labyrinths of the Old City, we will talk about Baku's history and find interesting details: beautiful carved balconies, a sanctuary, the studio of the artist Ali Shamsi, and the unusual monument to the poet Aliaga Vahid.
Mosques: Muhammad, Ismailiyya, and Juma. We will discuss the 'broken tower' and Peter the Great's army, explore interesting details of the buildings, and discuss their role in the city's life.
Details that will help you understand the daily life and customs of Baku residents. We will visit a two-story caravanserai, explore the medrese and functioning bathhouse of Gadji. And we will also find the shah's fountain and learn how it differs from the wells of ancient Rus.
During the 3-hour tour, I will also share some delicious places in Icheri Sheher: you will discover where to have breakfast with the traditional dish kuku, where to go for pomegranate wines, and which tea house is famous for the best jams. And I will reveal the secret of the famous arumdu glass.
