About this experience
My fascination with porcelain began in childhood when I saw a bird with the inscription 'Herend', 1826, at Aunt Toni's. Since then, I have been constantly amazed by the quality and beauty of Hungarian ceramics, valued worldwide. On a stroll through the center of Budapest, you will hear the stories of legendary brands, learn about famous clients, explore collections of products, and even see the city's colorful rooftops in a new light.
What to Expect
The history that began with Aunt Toni's birds
This is wine, hussars, lace, thermal springs, architecture, pastries, kings and queens, Hungarian aristocracy, and balls that left me dizzy. Or was it my Aunt Tanya? There was a little bird living on her bookshelf, and one day I took it in my hands and read: 'Herend', 1826. 'What does this mean? Where did this bird come from?' — 'A souvenir from Hungary,' Aunt Tanya replied. 'Be careful, it's very fragile. Let's have some tea... from a porcelain cup, with birds...'
That's how at the age of 10, I became acquainted with Hungarian porcelain, and now, after living here for over 28 years, my favorite pattern among 5000 types is still the one with birds. I now know the history of the 'Herend' company, have been to the active 1826 factory many times, take my guests on tours there, and often visit their flagship stores in Budapest. Back then, it was a delicate porcelain wonder for me, and I admired this little bird with its bead-like eyes, sipping tea from a porcelain cup, listening to Aunt's stories, and imagining how when I grow up, I will also drink from such a cup in the mornings and waltz at a ball.
