About this experience
Flodni, retes, strudel, kürtőskalács – the sweet masterpieces of Hungary can tell you as much about the country as its history or architecture! We will stroll through iconic cafes and pastry shops in the center of Pest in search of pastries and baked goods that are irresistible. Along the way, we will also discuss the origins of local desserts and Hungarian culinary habits.
What to Expect
Pastries in Pest – and where to find them
Our route will cover notable pastry shops and cafes in Pest – and there are plenty in the city! You will see windows filled with culinary masterpieces and taste works of pastry art. For example, we will find a place where you can taste the wonderful 'Esterházy' cake or the 'Dobos' cake. And we will wash down all this grandeur not only with tea and coffee, but also with unusual lemonades.
Sweet Legends of Hungary
In a couple of hours, you will hear stories, legends, and interesting facts related to the favorite treats of the Hungarians. We will explore the origins of the Ottoman roots in local desserts like retes and strudel. We will discuss the history of the Flodni pastry, the inventor of which played with an ancient Jewish recipe. We will find out where kürtőskalács and marzipan came from in Hungary. And we will remember what happens when cherry, cognac, and chocolate meet in one recipe.
At the end of the tour, you will receive a cream puff from us, a list of Budapest cafes, and an email with recipes.
