About this experience
You will visit the largest and most active volcano in Europe. On its slopes, there are over 300 craters, some of which you will definitely see. I will tell you how ancient Greeks 'settled' god of fire and blacksmithing Hephaestus on Etna, and the cunning Odysseus encountered the cyclops Polyphemus. You will also learn why local residents are not afraid of the volcano but cherish it, what grows in the valleys of Etna, and other interesting facts!
What to Expect
The Power and Beauty of Volcanic Spaces
You will ascend the southern slope of Etna to an altitude of 1980 meters above sea level and from the Rifugio Sapienza platform, you will see the extinct Sylvester crater. I will explain how Etna was born and clarify the uniqueness of its volcanic activity. From this point, you will enjoy a magnificent panorama of the eastern coast of Sicily. Optionally, you can continue to ascend through the southern or northern slopes to a height of 3000 meters by cable car and jeeps (ticket costs 65 euros per person). The southern slope will greet you with a 'lunar' desert landscape, while the northern slope is more 'dense' and green, with pine trees and cute donkeys with cheerful drivers wandering around.
Visit to Winery and Meeting with Farmers
As you descend from Etna, you will visit one of the local wineries, taste the hoppy drink and zero-kilometer products. Optionally, you will stop in one of the townships in the Etna area and taste the products produced there. For example, Bronte is famous for pistachios, Zafferana for honey and mushrooms. Each place has its own 'brand.' I will advise you on what and where is best to try and buy. If the weather permits, you can also visit the Alcantara River Canyon Natural Park and cool off in the waters of the mountain stream.
