About this experience
Catania. A city of contrasts, repeatedly destroyed by lava from Mount Etna and rebuilt from the same lava. Antiquity coexists with modernity, black with white, lavish facades of temples and palaces with walls of houses covered in graffiti... Together we will explore the architecture of Catania, discuss interesting moments from its past, and experience the flavors and smells at the fish market and beyond!
What to expect
Let's start with the main square and the cathedral, where the remains of the city's patron saint, St. Agatha, are located. Here lies the great Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini. Next to the cathedral, you will see the town hall and the elephant fountain - a symbol of the city. Then we will visit the hidden fish market Pescheria (open every day except Sunday until 1 PM), admire the medieval castle and ancient Roman amphitheater, the splendor of palaces, monasteries, and temples, squares and streets.
You will learn:
- What secrets the walls of the former Benedictine monastery hold
- What the cathedral and the Roman amphitheater have in common
- Where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the entire city against the backdrop of the volcano
- Who St. Agatha was and why participants in the procession in her memory wear long white garments
- How Mount Etna influences the history and life of the city
And of course, while strolling through the streets of Catania, you can try local sweets, cheeses, and sausages, wines, Sicilian street food - for example, arancino, and quench your thirst with a drink in the heat. It is the tastes of Sicily, its dishes, and plants that make the historical picture complete.
If you are interested in learning about the lives of the aristocrats and famous families of Catania and want to step into one of the ancient palaces, that can also be arranged!
