On this tour, you will discover the classical landmarks of Constantinople-Istanbul, with iconic monuments in the Sultanahmet area. I will tell you engagingly and clearly about their origins, architecture, and global significance.
What to Expect
Hagia Sophia Inside and Out
The first monument on our mini-journey is the Hagia Sophia - it served as a cathedral for 700 years in an undivided church and 400 years in an Orthodox church, and then 500 years as the main mosque of the Ottoman Caliphate. I will draw your attention to the details of its majestic appearance and splendid interior. You will learn about the dream of Byzantine Emperor Justinian when building the cathedral; imagine how coronations took place; remember the crusaders and get acquainted with the mosaics - unfortunately, they are closed, but I will explain everything using photos.
Topkapi Palace, Roxelana's Bath, and the Blue Mosque
You will see where 25 Ottoman sultans lived: we will talk about their deeds and the layout of Topkapi Palace. Continuing on the route, one of the oldest hammams in the city, built by the architect Sinan for Roxelana, the legendary lover of Sultan Suleiman. I will tell you about their relationship and the features of the baths. Nearby you will find yourself at the Blue Mosque. Why is it called that way? Did the student surpass his teacher? We will discuss the architectural solution of the temple and its significance, as well as examine the madrasa building.
Hippodrome - Back to Constantinople
Illustrations will help you imagine what the modern square looked like. You will hear interesting facts about chariot races, political and social life in the center of Byzantium. You will see three ancient columns and the German Fountain, a gift from the German Kaiser.
