About this experience
A brief introduction to the historical center's attractions will provide you with an overview of the outstanding architectural monuments that Istanbul boasts. You will appreciate the luxurious interiors and learn about the complex history of Hagia Sophia, the symbol of Byzantium's golden age. Explore the powerful yet seemingly weightless creation of Ahmed I - the Blue Mosque. You will also visit the largest Roman cistern in Europe and the Hippodrome square, where I will narrate the history of the monuments from various ancient civilizations gathered here.
What to Expect
Hagia Sophia, or 'Solomon, I have surpassed thee!'
A magnificent symbol of Byzantium's golden age, an icon of medieval architecture and Byzantine art - a landmark without which Istanbul cannot be imagined. You will hear legends about Emperor Justinian I, the history of the temple's construction, which involved a colossal budget and remained the world's largest temple for almost a thousand years until St. Peter's Basilica was built in the 17th century. I will tell you about the temple's tumultuous life, surviving looting by the Crusaders in the 13th century, its transformation into a mosque during the Ottoman period, and the times when it became a museum after the establishment of the Turkish Republic.
Enchanting Blue Mosque
Another iconic symbol of the city will be the next stop on the itinerary - you will visit the fabulous Sultan Ahmed Mosque, built in the 17th century by order of Ahmed I. Studying this exceptional example of Islamic and world architecture, you will understand the basics of two architectural styles: classical Ottoman and Byzantine. Examine the multitude of blue ceramic tiles used in the mosque's wall decorations, their elaborate ornaments, and stained glass windows. And you will learn how the mosque creates a sense of spaciousness and the dome appears suspended in the air.
Basilica Cistern and Hippodrome
You will also explore the underground reservoir of Byzantium, where I will talk about the most extensive Roman cistern in Europe. Then you will visit the place where in the 3rd century AD, after the city became part of the Roman Empire, Emperor Septimius Severus built a huge hippodrome for the people's entertainment, hosting sports events, chariot races, gladiatorial battles, and circus performances, similar to the Roman Colosseum. You will learn about the most notable events that took place here in the heart of Constantinople's political life over half a century. Besides, you will encounter Istanbul's oldest monument - the Egyptian Obelisk, which is a staggering 3500 years old!
