About this experience
Java Island, the only Sultanate of Indonesia, stands out dramatically from other provinces with its way of life, cultural features, and stunning architecture. In just one day, you will explore the main attractions of Java: visit the largest Buddhist temple in the world, read the Hindu epic on stone reliefs, peek into the sultan's chambers, touch the natural beauty and traditions of the island.
What to Expect
Borobudur - Citadel of Buddhism
Located in the center of Java, you will visit the 'eighth wonder of the world' - the largest Buddhist temple in the world, Borobudur. You will see hundreds of Buddha statues, examine reliefs depicting religious stories, and learn why Borobudur is constructed in the form of a mandala. I will tell you about the rituals performed by pilgrims from around the world in the temple and what awaits you if you touch each Buddha statue on the upper terrace.
Temple Architecture and Religions of Java Island
You will visit the globally renowned complex of ancient Buddhist and Hindu temples - the archaeological park of Prambanan. We will pay special attention to the main treasure of the complex, the Loro Jonggrang temple. This grand structure looks breathtaking from a distance, but we will definitely get closer to examine the amazing stone reliefs illustrating the Indonesian version of the Ramayana epic.
Everyday Life in the Sultan's Palace
You will learn about the history and political structure of Java at the Kraton - an extensive architectural complex that includes the functioning sultan's palace, gardens, a mosque, the beautiful Taman Sari (Water Castle), and a residential area once inhabited by the sultan's servants. You will visit the publicly accessible part of the palace: stroll through inner courtyards and rooms, observe portraits of the sultan's family members, and see the luxurious possessions of Java rulers such as porcelain, clothing, and batik. If you are lucky, you may even witness a shadow puppet theatre performance and the gamelan ensemble, a traditional Indonesian orchestra.
