About this experience
Vienna is the center of Europe, the musical capital, the birthplace of psychoanalysis, and a crossroads of cultures. The galleries of Belvedere Palace house works of art that will help you discover all the facets of this city and the specific Austrian identity. Genius loci, or the 'spirit of the place', is contained in every creation by the artist, often against their will. This tour will enable you to delve into the masterpieces of Viennese painters and sculptors, and through them, come closer to understanding the Austrian mentality.
What to Expect
All facets of national identity
I will help you adjust your perspective so that you can see that many things in art are not accidental. By examining Gustav Klimt's paintings 'The Kiss' and 'Judith', you will understand why in Vienna, the focus of medicine shifted to female sexuality, and the works 'Girl and Death' and 'Embrace' by Egon Schiele will explain how this city became the birthplace of psychoanalysis. Ferdinand Waldmüller's canvases will demonstrate the Austrians' tendency to turn even tragedy into a well-marketable image. And even the baroque decor of Belvedere Palace, with its abundance of ancient heroic tales in the decoration and portraits of military leaders, will give you an idea of the distinctive pride that permeates the aura of Vienna. Both wreaths and numerous tourists who find themselves here are immersed in a unique self-awareness characteristic of the mentality, and you will feel, see, and notice this yourself.
