What to Expect
Treasures of the Kunstkammer
The museum tour will start with a visit to the Kunstkammer (translated from German as a room of art). In its halls, there are many curious exhibits, each of which holds an interesting story. You will see objects that were once exotic, astonishing, sometimes even had magical properties. You will learn how people used to live, what they thought, what they feared, what delighted them, and what they believed in. I will tell you why, for example, people believed in unicorns and what games they liked to play in ancient times. You will also admire one of the most delightful objects in the Kunstkammer - the Saliera. This is the only jewelry piece by Benvenuto Cellini, made on order for the French king. I will tell you during the tour how it ended up in the Viennese museum. Besides, you will get acquainted with 16-17th-century automata, clocks, and globes by walking through the magnificent hall with the collection of King Rudolf II.
Imperial Painting Collection
If desired, you can also visit the painting gallery and see paintings carefully collected by members of the imperial family. Here is the largest collection of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, as well as works by such renowned artists as Raphael, Titian, Rubens, Dürer, Velázquez, Caravaggio, Tintoretto, Veronese.
