About this experience
Florence was not located on important trade routes, it was not on the sea coast, and pilgrims did not particularly visit it. However, starting from the 12th century, artisan production began to thrive here, Florence quickly became rich and rose to the level of pan-European trade. Trade, profit, merchants, money changers, bankers, the more unprincipled, daring, cunning, and throatier you were, the better your business went. On this tour, you will immerse yourself in the history and atmosphere of the trading Florence of the Middle Ages, learn how the city transformed into the leading financial and industrial center of Europe and how its enrichment affected the architectural appearance.
What to Expect
- Crafts. The main commodity of trade and profit was woolen Florentine cloth, thin, soft, brightly colored in pure colors, oh, how good it is for a piece and a new dress, and this one, with a border embroidered with gold and silver thread, is just a marvel! I will tell you how local craftsmen produced this cloth and how they managed to earn so well on it. And, of course, besides it, what else did they successfully trade abroad.
- Bankers. In addition to crafts, banking business was actively developing. You will learn when and how the first banking houses of Florence appeared, who and how could become a banker at that time, and what opportunities they had afterwards.
- Architecture. Insane wealth was built on this business - all this is reflected in the city buildings - palaces, churches. We will walk around the city and examine the architectural features of its development parallel to its commercial enrichment.
- People's Stories. Many palaces of those times are associated with interesting stories - or rather with people - their customers, residents, and architects - I will definitely tell you about them.
