About this experience
What was the beginning of Jaffa? Of course, it was the sea. 150 years ago, the Jaffa port became too crowded, and the Jewish youth left the ancient city to found new neighborhoods outside of Jaffa. I will take you through the historic center, tell you about life during the times of the oldest buildings in the city, and you will compare them with modern structures.
Program
- We will meet at the Clock Tower in Old Jaffa.
- I will show you the Andromeda Rock, the old port street named after zodiac signs, and the hanging tree.
- You will visit the Church of St. Peter and the administrative building of the Ottoman Empire.
- You will see the Jerusalem Gates and the remains of the city walls, as well as the famous Clock Tower, a building that was blown up during the War of Independence.
- You will approach the 'Zodiac Signs' fountain, where you can make a wish.
- You will visit the flea market.
- When you get hungry, you can have a snack at a restaurant in the market or elsewhere along the route
- We will leave Old Jaffa and walk along the promenade to the first Jewish neighborhood outside the city walls, Neve Tzedek. You will see the house where the famous writer and Nobel laureate S. Y. Agnon lived; the house where the artist Nahum Gutman grew up, and nearby lived the famous writer from Belarus Dvora Baron. You will see the first cinema, synagogue, schools. We will talk about Zionism and the people who founded Tel Aviv.
- We will see the new tram on the Jerusalem Boulevard, the Gesher Theater, the American Colony, and the first city railway station of 1892.
- We will visit Rothschild Boulevard.
- You will visit the site of the first municipal high school, and you will be able to visit the first city railway station.
- And finally, we will arrive at the famous Trumpeldor Cemetery, where the founders of the city and the country are buried.
