About this experience
The eponymous capital of the island of Corfu, or as the Greeks call it - Kerkyra, - attracts not only with significant sanctuaries, but also with historical sites. On the tour, I will take you through the most beautiful streets of the city, tell you about interesting historical events, and share unique details that only a person who has lived here for many years knows. You will see an unusual panorama at Cape Kanoni - an airplane against the backdrop of a white stone church in the middle of the sea - and find out if the tiny islet nearby is related to mice. You will also be able to venerate the relics of Saint Spyridon and learn the story of a rare icon in the Monastery of the Virgin of Kassopitra.
What to expect
Historical heart of the city
During a walk in the center of Corfu, you will learn about the history of the island and its capital, discover the peculiarities of the local way of life. You will visit the central square Liston, reminiscent of the Parisian Rue de Rivoli, and find out why there is a monument to the Russian Admiral Fyodor Ushakov in the center of the Greek island. You will also head to the Kanoni district - a suburb of Corfu, which remembers crusaders, Genoese pirates, and Turkish invaders. At Cape Kanoni, a real photo hunt for airplanes awaits you! Here, literally within arm's reach, in the middle of the sea, is a runway, and the tiny island of Pondikonisi is visible.
Holy places of Kerkyra
Corfu, as is often the case with European islands, is famous for its numerous temples and monasteries. You will visit the Church of Saint Spyridon, where the relics of this deeply revered saint are kept. At a certain time, the priest opens the casket, and at that moment you can see the face of the miracle worker Saint Spyridon. In Cape Kanoni, you will also admire the Vlacherna Monastery - the white stone church literally floats in the blue waters of the Ionian Sea. And you will see the Monastery of the Virgin of Kassopitra - a place where 75 particles of the relics of saints are kept, with a wonderful healing story associated with this place.
