What to expect
Walk through one of Greece's largest ports
The tour will start with a visit to a store of natural Cretan products, where you will get acquainted with the gastronomic world of Crete and be able to purchase and try tasty and healthy island souvenirs, as well as learn a lot of interesting facts about their production. Walking along the commercial and passenger port, you will see ancient fortress walls of 6-meter thickness and a beautiful Venetian fortress, as well as discover the favorite spots of the city's residents - numerous restaurants and taverns. Additionally, you will learn about famous Cretans, such as Nikos Kazantzakis - the famous Greek writer, whose novel inspired the well-known film 'Zorba the Greek'. It was in this movie that the Sirtaki dance was performed, which we will also talk about during the walk. Along the way, I will tell you about Cretan traditions, culture, and religion from the inside - you will learn about the strong family values here, which holidays are celebrated with special splendor, how the mountain-island way of life has influenced the mentality of Cretans, and many other facts from the modern realities of the Greek island.
Famous and hidden spots of the Old Town
In the historic center, you will see the most significant local churches, one of which houses the relics of the founder of Orthodox religion in Crete - a disciple of the Apostle Paul himself. You will visit unusual leather workshops of Cretan craftsmen, stroll through a traditional tourist bazaar, as well as stop by the fish market and delicatessen stores. Our program will include the most 'delicious' spots of the city, where you will taste popular Cretan products - various types of cheeses, olive oil, and olives. Along the way, you will encounter the main architectural landmarks of Heraklion, walk through the alleys of lush parks, and relax at a square with famous Venetian fountains. If desired, you can visit some museums in Crete and enjoy a cup of aromatic Greek coffee in a cozy cafe overlooking the capital of Crete.
Surroundings of the Heraklion region
Then we will visit an interesting monastery located high in the mountains, offering a view of the entire Heraklion. You will see a picturesque Orthodox monastery 'in the clouds' - almost literally! Rarely visited by regular tourists, this place will amaze you with its tranquility and seclusion. The olive trees, bergamot, scents of mountain herbs, pure mountain air, and the unique way of life of Cretan villages will help you immerse yourself in a special atmosphere. In the monastery, you can purchase beautiful handmade icons and visit a unique weaving workshop, which is almost extinct in Crete.
Finally, you will have lunch at one of the most famous taverns in Heraklion with generous portions, an excellent selection of Cretan dishes, and the best view of the harbor. And lastly, another pleasant surprise awaits you!
