About this experience
Just an hour's drive from Tbilisi lies the amazing natural monument and natural fortress - the Birtvisi Canyons. Bizarre rocks and enchanted forests, gloomy valleys of the canyon, streams and grottoes, panoramic views for tens of kilometers around, ancient towers and fortresses will be appreciated by both outdoor and nature enthusiasts, as well as photographers. And on the way, there will be a short informative excursion into the history of the region.
What to Expect
📜 Stories of the Region Along the Way
We will meet in Tbilisi and head southwest by car. Along the way, you will hear interesting facts from the life of the region. Learn how King David the Builder won the most important battle in Georgia's history in these mountains. I will tell you why hundreds of German religious sectarians moved here in 1817 and show their colonial settlement. Passing by one of the fortresses, we will talk about the late queen Tamar who rested there, and her former husband's conspiracy against her. Also about what Tamerlane was doing in the Birtvisi Canyons.
🏞 Two Hiking Options
You will pass through narrow canyon labyrinths, climb to lookout platforms on the ridge peaks, see a medieval tower and one of the most important fortresses of the region, cleverly hidden in the depths of these rocks. I will offer you two options to choose from: light version - a walk with a visit to one tower and the lower fortress, or extreme version with elements of rock climbing (additional ascent to the ruins of the upper citadel and watchtower). Both options are available for people with regular urban physical training.

Incredibly beautiful route, delightful nature! Not the easiest walking trail, but for me it didn't pose any difficulties as Ilya chose the optimal pace, adjusting to our abilities. While we were driving to the starting point of the hike, he told a lot of interesting things about the places we passed...
