About this experience
This will not only be a gastronomic walk with a tasting of all the famous and unknown, but undoubtedly delicious national dishes: soups, buns, currywurst, and labskaus - for adventurous gourmets. If you find yourself in Hamburg on a Sunday, we will head to the colorful fish market. I will introduce you to local celebrities - Dieter, who has been selling eels for 60 years, and reggae barista Jessie.
What to Expect
You will definitely try:
- Fish sandwiches (Fischbrötchen). Traditionally made with "Matjes" herring or marinated herring "Bismarck". I will offer you this progenitor of the hamburger with various seafood fillings.
- Hamburg eel soup (Hamburger Aalsuppe). A dish with a historical twist, it has an amazing aroma and warms you up in cold weather.
- Hamburg crayfish soup (Hamburger Krebssuppe). You will understand why the locals love it so much.
- Labskaus. A specific dish in every sense invented by sailors in difficult sailing periods. Not everyone likes it, but if you are a fan of unexpected taste sensations, it will be interesting.
- Cinnamon buns (Franzbrötchen). This simultaneously crispy and soft pastry can only be found in Hamburg. According to the classic recipe, they add cinnamon, but now these buns are also made with chocolate, nuts, or raisins.
- Currywurst. One of the favorite fast foods of the people of Hamburg. It is offered everywhere, but it's important to try it from the best places. That's where I'll take you.
- Aromatic coffee. It was through Hamburg that rare varieties of this drink were imported into Europe. Local authorities did not hesitate and created a whole coffee museum. We will visit the museum cafe and try the very varieties that made Hamburg famous back in the early 18th century.
- Craft beer, presented with various types
- And this is far from everything, but we need to leave some mystery 😊
Despite Hamburg being considered one of the most expensive cities in Europe, I will show you places with affordable and delicious food.
What about the fish market?
It is difficult to imagine Hamburg without this ancient fish market (Fischmarkt). Since the 18th century, it has only operated on Sundays and only from 5-6 am to 10 am. How atmospheric and colorful it is here! You will find everything from the freshest fish to handicrafts. But the most important thing at the market is the people. Here we will meet Dieter Brunn, the founder of Aale-Dieter, that very eel seller, and the charismatic barista Jessie, whom you'll remember.
