About this experience
Over 12 centuries, Hamburg has seen it all: Viking raids and Napoleon's troops, floods and bombings, performances by the Beatles and Bach, wealth and poverty. During the tour, you will be amazed at how many different worlds coexist in one city. And I will share intriguing stories about sights and give useful tips for independent exploration.
What to Expect
Hanseatic Hamburg
Our city tour will start at the city hall - the quintessence of Hanseatic greatness. You will learn what the German Kaiser didn't like about this building, and appreciate the architect's joke. In the inner courtyard, you will admire a wonderful fountain and discover the 'Russian trace' in Hamburg.
Maritime Hamburg
At the building of the Patriotic Community of Hamburg, we will find a mark of the terrible flood of 1962: I will explain how it became a fateful hour for future Chancellor of the FRG Helmut Schmidt. And on the roof of the F. Laeisz steamship company building, you will see a poodle - and understand how this endearing creature is connected to one of the best sailboats in Russia.
Military Hamburg
We will explore the interior and exterior of St. Nicholas' Church. It is a vivid example of neo-Gothic architecture and a witness to the devastating air raids of World War II - you will learn what the city was like during this period and afterwards.
Merchant Hamburg
On one of the oldest surviving streets in Hamburg - Deichstrasse - we will talk about the cunning Hamburg merchants, 'pepper sacks': how they built trading empires, arranged their homes, and intercepted letters with Barbarossa. I will tell you about the city's first harbor, from which Hamburg's remarkable trading history began. Then we will take a stroll through the Speicherstadt warehouse district and admire its canals.
Modern Hamburg
The final point of the route is the futuristic building of the Elbphilharmonie, opening a new chapter in Hamburg's history in the 21st century. Afterward, you can independently climb to its observation deck: from a height of 37 meters above the Elbe, you will be treated to an unforgettable view of the city and port - a bright conclusion to our walk.
