Individual tour: Must-try of Amsterdam - Discover the essence of Dutch cuisine!
About this experience
Travel sharpens the taste. New countries and cultures are discovered not only at the ceremonial entrances of castles and museums, but also from the inside - through markets and taverns, street fast food and haute cuisine. Surprisingly, many guests in Amsterdam are under the mistaken impression that Dutch cuisine does not exist at all. Let's debunk this myth together and make sure that food in the Netherlands is one continuous and endless pleasure. And by the end of the tour, you will see for yourself that nothing reflects the national character better and more honestly than cuisine.
What to expect
Delicious start
We will start our tour with a very tasty breakfast in a place that seems to have materialized by the will of a whimsical wizard from a fairy tale. However, if you prefer to skip breakfast, it is possible: we still have plenty of culinary temptations ahead of us.
Icons: cheeses and herring
Of course, we cannot ignore Dutch cheeses. You will learn how not to get lost in this variety of cheeses, where to buy the most delicious cheese, how to choose it correctly, and also how to eat it to fully unfold its noble taste. We will talk about "Gout de terroir", as well as about cheese fairs with auctions. Through secret alleys, you will make your way to the best herring in the city and find out the secret of its preparation and pickling. You will learn why herring has become a national symbol, whose cheeks are a delicacy, and what is the benefit of the Dutch "mafia". We will talk about how Peter the Great wanted to bring mysterious Dutch recipes to his homeland and why he failed.
From fast food to haute cuisine
Depending on your tastes, we will try local - sometimes quite unusual - fast food and significantly higher cuisine, taste liqueurs, genevers, and even eat alcohol with a spoon, savor local desserts and chocolates or delightful Amsterdam pies on a terrace hanging right above the water of the canal. You will learn what skills you need to possess to not pay for what you drank. We will talk about local - sometimes shocking - culinary indulgences and an incredible invention of the 60s, which helped reduce the purchase of hot food to 1 minute. We will tell you what "incorrect" coffee is and what "tea" the Dutch drink. And, of course, we will taste local beer with traditional snacks in a real "brown" bar with an incredible history. By the way, have you ever tried beer on rainwater? And "pickle juice"? :)
A view of Amsterdam through stories about local gastronomy
And all this time we will show you this beautiful city and tell stories - about the first attempt of industrial espionage in Russia, associated specifically with Dutch gastronomy, about "crazy" fish and virgin herring, about an advertising campaign, the effect of which has lasted for half a millennium already, and about how important love is in cooking. From these whimsical stories by the end of the tour, you will have a complete idea of the Dutch national character, who these people are, how they live, what worries them, and how they managed to build one of the most successful societies in the world.
And in conclusion...
Since a magical day requires no less beautiful ending, by your choice, we will take you to a secret terrace of an excellent café with a real Amsterdam atmosphere and delicious pies or we will reserve a table for you in a restaurant serving high Dutch cuisine. Wherever you feel like going, that's where we will go.
