Sultanahmet: monuments of Istanbul's main historical district
About this experience
In 2.5 hours, you will touch the legacy of three powerful empires: Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman. In the heart of the city, you will explore the masterpieces of architects, walk in the footsteps of legendary rulers, visit places of special sacred significance. And you will feel the special power of the ancient city on the banks of the Bosphorus.
What to expect
Sultanahmet Square (Hippodrome)
We will start the tour in the square that was used for sports competitions during the Roman Empire. Today, it is one of the oldest places in Istanbul. Here you will see unique objects with a thousand-year history from different parts of the world: Greek columns, Egyptian obelisk, and the German Fountain.
Hagia Sophia
Next, we will visit the main Christian temple of Ancient Byzantium and the cradle of Russian Orthodox Christianity. I will introduce you to the architecture of this iconic building and tell the history of the rise and fall of the first Christian rulers.
Blue Mosque
We will admire another masterpiece of architectural art - both from the outside and inside. Through the mosque, you will see features of Byzantine and Ottoman styles and learn about the rich decoration of this 17th-century monument.
Basilica Cistern
To conclude, we will descend into the amazing world of underground reservoirs. These structures are perhaps the most mystical attraction of the city. Dim light, illuminated carved columns, the head of Medusa Gorgon - and the history of the complex that goes back centuries...
