Group excursion to Martvili Canyon and Prometheus Cave from Kobuleti, thermal springs
About this experience
Among the strict mountains, ancient monasteries, and cultural landmarks of Georgia, you will find many similar landscapes, but Martvili Canyon is unlike anything you have seen before. Traveling through western Georgia, you will discover the world of mesmerizing nature - glide between the green slopes of the canyon, touch the stalactites, and walk through the corridors of Prometheus Cave. And in the end - explore the most inspiring places of Imereti and gain a better understanding of the philosophy of the Georgian people.
What to Expect
The Lost World of Martvili Canyon
You will find yourself in one of the most beautiful and mysterious places in western Georgia - Martvili Canyon, where the great king of unified Georgia, David the Builder, spent his childhood. For thousands of years, water has carved a path through soft limestone to create this natural wonder that will transport you to a fairytale world far from civilization. You will float on a boat along the sheer cliffs, see the underground river that turns into a waterfall at the canyon's exit, and also witness fossils preserved in the depths of the canyon.
Descent into Prometheus Cave
Among the thousands of caves in Imereti, Prometheus Cave is the largest and most impressive. Inside, you will be amazed by the forms of stalactites and stalagmites that create frozen stone waterfalls, breathe in the healing air, see underground lakes that have never seen sunlight. And after, you can float out of the cave on a boat along the underground river.
Cultural Aspects and Legends of Georgia
During the journey, we will talk about the peculiarities of the Georgian people, their kinship ties, and the origin of the Georgian language. You will learn who the Kartvelians are, hear local legends, touch the heritage of Colchian culture that inspired the Greeks to create the myth of the Argonauts, and try to guess what was transported in the amphorae found at the bottom of Lake Paleostomi (Greek word meaning 'old fortress'). I will also tell you about the mythical city of Phasis and guide you through the border between East and West, passing along the Rioni River.
