About this experience
Single-storey houses with thatched roofs, boats silently gliding along the canals, dense greenery and bright flower beds - the village of Giethoorn has hardly changed over the years. Together we will walk among the ancient houses, take a boat ride along the canal roads, and see how the Dutch lived a century ago. I will tell you about the farmers' way of life and reveal interesting facts about Giethoorn.
What to expect
Surrounded by water
The main highlight of the village is its canals, which are used instead of roads: I will explain how this happened and what features are associated with this mode of transportation. You will understand why the bridges in the village are so high, and the boats always have flat bottoms. Why special dishes had to be invented for milk and how livestock and haystacks were transported by water.
Museums in the village
Many houses in Giethoorn are about 150-200 years old, and one of them is a museum of folk life. Here you will get acquainted with the life of farmers, peek into the living rooms of the house, and visit the livestock yard. I will tell you why thatched roofs are called 'camels', how drinking water was supplied to the houses, and what crafts the residents were engaged in.
Another amazing museum in Giethoorn showcases a collection of precious and semi-precious stones and minerals. Unique exhibits are collected from different countries, and among the fossils, you will find a lot of interesting things.
Having explored the attractions of the village, we can have lunch in a colorful place and take a boat ride on the village canals.
