You will explore the history of houseboats, visit hidden courtyards, and discover the peculiarities of Dutch daily life. What to Expect
Unique Atmosphere of the Northern Venice
On a walk along the former city moat, Herengracht, Keizersgracht, and Prinsengracht canals, you will hear the story of engineering masterpieces and learn how the numerous water arteries became a symbol of the resilience, perseverance, and adventurous spirit of the Amsterdammers. I will also show you the smallest house in the world, near the floating houses we will discuss the tradition of living on water and what makes their residents' lives so interesting. You will also discover a hidden Catholic church where all services were held under the fear of being arrested. And you will get acquainted with the infamous history of the Anne Frank House museum.
Amsterdam and Its Inhabitants
On the square in front of the Northern Church, you will be transported back to the 18th century and learn about the epicenter of many urban riots. You will learn about the beer culture in the Middle Ages, and near the West India Company building, you will delve into the origins of Dutch gambling and trade. If desired, you can visit the shops of Amsterdam designers in the colorful 9 Streets district. You will peek into hidden courtyards, encounter toy houses, understand from what details the lives of local residents are woven, and discover the peculiarities of the Dutch mentality. And in one of the oldest establishments, you will taste traditional Dutch apple pie.
