You will visit the most famous monument of Hellenistic era in Armenia and a unique architectural structure and pilgrimage center - the Geghard Monastery complex, where one of the greatest relics of the Christian world was kept - the spear of Longinus, which pierced the body of Jesus Christ on the Cross.
What to Expect
History of Garni Temple
You will learn who and when built the temple dedicated to the god of the Sun Mithra. Explore the Greek mosaic, we will talk to you about the special craftsmanship of Armenian architects who performed skillful carving on basalt. I will tell you about the long journey that the pagan temple went through - how it was a royal residence, how it survived even after the adoption of Christianity, how it was destroyed during an earthquake and later restored. You will see the remains of the fortress and the royal palace with Hellenistic mosaic, as well as a 3rd-century bath.
Geghardavank – 'the Monastery of the Spear' 4th century
Located in the amazingly beautiful gorge of the Goght River, the monastery preserves ancient history and has special significance for Christians. You will learn the most interesting facts about the monastery, such as how in one of the cave cells in the 13th century lived the famous Armenian historian Mkhitar Ayrivanetsi. I will tell you what makes the construction unique, the place of its foundation, and its remarkable ability to rebuild after each destruction. The Geghard Monastery is included in the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
