What to Expect
Secrets of the Venetian Islands
On the way to Murano, I will tell you the history and legends of the marvelous islands of the Venetian Lagoon: tiny and large, inhabited and abandoned by people. You will hear about the famous San Lazzaro degli Armeni, the dying Poveglia, and the island of Lazaretto, from which the word 'lazaretto' originated. Also, about the beach Lido di Venezia, where Byron, Goethe, and Yesenin stayed, and the island where Stravinsky, Diaghilev, Brodsky, and Weil found peace.
Island of Murano - history and legends
You will leisurely walk through the picturesque Murano and hear its history. Visit the basilica of Saints Mary and Donato from the 7th century, examine the ancient golden mosaics, and learn about the unusual thing kept behind the main altar. I will tell you why the Serenissima Republic decided in 1295 to move all glass furnaces to the island of Murano, why glassblowers were forced to live on the island and could leave Venice only after obtaining special permission.
Secrets of Murano Glassblowers
You will visit a local factory and see how glass is made using ancient techniques. Creating exquisite masterpieces is a very complex and often dangerous occupation, as the masters melt glass in fire up to 1500 degrees. You will learn why Murano glass is considered the most valuable in the world and, if desired, visit the factory shop where you can buy original items.
