About this experience
Kutna Hora used to be one of the richest cities in the kingdom thanks to silver mining. We will talk about the history of the city, visit the Royal Mint and see the minting of coins, as well as explore the main attractions: All Saints Chapel, St. Barbara's Cathedral, and the legendary Sternberg Castle.
What to Expect
Old castle on the hill
First, we will visit the castle of the ancient Sternberg family, where the count still lives with his family and sometimes personally greets tourists. As you look at the pre-castle bastion and stroll through the inner courtyard, you will notice unusual architectural details, and inside you will admire the rich Baroque interiors of fifteen halls, stop at paintings, tapestries, hunting trophies, and a collection of weapons. We will talk about the history of the castle and the decisions made within its walls. After the tour, you can enjoy a fairytale view of the surroundings and buy a memorable souvenir.
Bone lace
Next, you will find yourself in the ancient town of Kutna Hora: amidst legends of kings, knights, and silver miners. The Medieval Ossuary Chapel is one of the main attractions that impresses to the core. You will see pyramids of skulls and a huge chandelier containing a complete set of human bones. After a short break for lunch and souvenirs, we will go to St. Barbara's Church - a gloomy cathedral whose spires you may have seen in the movie 'The Omen.' I will tell you about St. Barbara - the patron saint of miners, and point out the unique details of the shrine.
Silver town
Walking along Redgar Street, we will come to the mint. From the 12th to the 15th century, Kutna Hora mines produced 1/3 of all European silver, making this site worth attention. You will learn a lot about minting coins, see the minters' houses, and the magic Prague groschen itself. Strolling through the town, you will see the former mint, Plague and Moravian columns, St. James's Cathedral, Gothic House, as well as numerous chapels and churches.
After the tour, there will be a break for lunch and free time for independent exploration of the surroundings. Before entering Prague, we will make a sanitary stop at the Fashion Arena outlet center, where you can have a coffee and rest, or visit the stores if desired.
