From Gate to Gate: Overview Tour of Rome
About this experience
We will cross the city from its southeastern to northern gates of its fortress walls, explore the diversity and magnificence of architectural styles, see the main attractions of Rome, and trace the most important periods of the Eternal City's evolution. I will help you build a logical chain of historical events and turn our tour into an interesting walk, after which the city and its inhabitants will become clearer and closer to you.
Program
- We will imagine ourselves as travelers from the Middle Ages and enter the city through the San Giovanni Gate. The Aurelian Walls will tell you about the fear of the Roman Empire from barbarian invasions.
- You will have a magnificent view of the Basilica of St. John Lateran on the Lateran Hill and the Baptistery, where half of Rome was baptized, and you will learn about the arrival of Christianity in pagan Rome.
- Passing by the ruins of the gladiator school, we will head to the Colosseum, the bloody theater of death and horror. Here I will tell you about the grandeur of Ancient Rome, gladiatorial battles, emperors, and the daily life of people living 2000 years ago.
- Walking along the Imperial Forums street, we will climb to the Capitoline Hill, one of the oldest hills in the city, where you will see the "Capitoline Wolf" and learn the story of the founding of Rome by the twins Romulus and Remus, according to modern scholars' version.
- Ahead of us are the Victor Emmanuel II Monument - a symbol of unified Italy in the 19th century, and Piazza Venezia, which was the center of fascist Rome.
- Through narrow streets, we will head to the Trevi Fountain. Here reigns the true spirit of the Eternal City, which attracted writers and artists from all over the world. I will tell you about the Baroque era and its heroes.
- After performing the traditional ritual of travelers, we head to the Spanish Steps. And before us comes alive Rome of the 16-17th centuries with its traditions, Papal antics, curiosities, and heroes.
- After a short rest at the "Barcaccia" Fountain, admiring the city from the Pincho panorama, we will end our journey at the People's Square near the northern Gates of Rome. Here you will learn about the Napoleonic era and the realization of the last project of Papal Rome.
- In addition to history, I will introduce you to the diversity and features of the city's architectural styles, tell you about modern Rome (transport, establishments, museums, Italian culture, behavior rules), advise you on how to spend a great time after the tour.
In this way, you will trace the main historical periods of Rome, learn about the heroes of each era, get acquainted with the immortal heritage of great times, as well as with the daily life of the city and Romans today. You will learn to navigate the capital, uncover the secrets of true Roman holidays, and be able to continue exploring the city on your own with pleasure!
