About this experience
We will explore north-western Montenegro. Historically, this region is known as Old Herzegovina. Our path will take us along one of the most beautiful roads in the country, with a climb above the Bay of Kotor. You will get acquainted with the history of these places and visit amazing monasteries with a similar fate.
Itinerary
We will visit the monasteries: Kosijerevo, Piva, and Zagradje. During the construction of hydroelectric power stations in the second half of the 20th century, they could have ended up at the bottom of the reservoir.
- You will learn how nearly 2000 square meters of frescoes were preserved in the Piva Monastery, get acquainted with the treasury of this monastery, where many priceless artifacts are collected: particles of the relics of St. King Uroš, St. Gregory the Enlightener of Armenia, St. Gregory the Theologian and St. Elevferiy, as well as particles of the relics of 11 unknown saints.
- Visit the Kosijerevo Monastery, where the foot of the Apostle Luke and a particle of the relics of St. Arsenius of Serbia are stored.
- You will see the Skadar and Piva Lakes — magnificent creations of human hands in harmony with pristine nature, the Mratinje Dam, which is considered the largest in Europe (reaching a height of 220 meters).
- And also get to know the Zagradje Monastery, lost amidst virgin nature at the foot of the ruins of the medieval fortress-town Sokol. From there, you will witness the confluence of the Tara and Piva rivers and the birth of the Drina River.
Optionally, for an additional fee, you can stay overnight at a rafting camp and in the morning take a rafting trip through the Tara River Canyon, the largest in Europe!
