About this experience
I invite you to one of the most mystical places in Florence - the medieval monastery of San Marco. It is a gem of Renaissance art, a symbol of the early Renaissance era and the rise of the Medici dynasty. We will visit the cells where blessed monks and influential rulers prayed, admire unique frescoes, and discuss the political turmoil of that time.
What to Expect
The Legacy of Fra Beato Angelico
We will enter each cell and see the beautiful frescoes of the blessed monk Fra Beato Angelico, who prayed long before their creation and wept at the crucifixion of Christ. You will see how lovingly he depicted not only his heroes but also every little blade of grass, flowers, and trees. The purity of his soul is conveyed through radiant colors and a space filled with divine light.
The Cells of Cosimo de' Medici the Elder, Savonarola, and Michelangelo's Connection to the Monastery
We will definitely visit the cell designated for the Medicis, where Cosimo the Elder prayed in solitude and monastery silence. We will also visit the cell of the monk Savonarola, talk about his relationships with Lorenzo the Magnificent, as well as the political upheavals of the 15th century. And of course, I will tell you about the connection of the monastery with Michelangelo and his teacher, who also immortalized himself with a fresco in the refectory of the monastery.
