About this experience
San Marco Monastery is a unique place, part of which is a museum, while the other part is home to monks. You will visit the inner courtyard in the Renaissance style and the guest room, where a large collection of works by Beato Angelico is displayed. You will see the first library of Florence and learn about the cat in the 'Last Supper' painting and the significance of being the first female artist in the history of painting.
What to expect
You will see the cell with the remains of the clothes of the monk Savonarola and the board from the bonfire where he was burned. Admire portraits of Cosimo de' Medici, Antonino Pierozzi, and other famous figures, as well as works by Beato Angelico. In the former library, explore ancient manuscripts and samples of paints used in the 15th century.
I will tell you:
- Why Beato Angelico was called the Blessed Angel and the characteristics of his painting style
- The meanings of the cat, trees, and birds in the fresco 'Last Supper'
