What to Expect
Glasgow and Religion
We will not delve deeply into the intricacies of the city's religious life, but we cannot ignore it either, as Glasgow's history began in the 6th century with a small Christian settlement. Processes of spreading Christian teachings have influenced the city's development, its appearance, and the mentality of its inhabitants. During the tour, we will visit the Cathedral, located in the historical center. We will discuss Anglicanism, Catholicism, Protestantism, and how different religious trends have competed for dominance in British land over centuries. I will also tell you legends about the city's founder – Saint Mungo, and explain the symbolism of the coat of arms.
History of Trade and Industry
Glasgow was one of the industrial hubs of Britain, being a major trading partner with the USA since the 18th century. The trade core of Glasgow dates back to the 12th century. You will cross the Mercat Cross and learn about the Trongate and its significance. You will see the former Templeton factory, whose facade resembles the Moscow Kremlin. You will walk down the main shopping street – Buchanan Street and learn about the notable features of the Glasgow Metro. During the tour, we will make a stop to have a cup of tea (or coffee) with a pastry, just like the British do.
Architecture and Nature
We will stroll through the modern city center, George Square, where entrepreneurs of the New Era and city rulers have built their offices. We will walk along Ingram Street – a street with a rich history and elegant Victorian architecture. On one of the city's highest hills, you will see a necropolis where famous historical figures rest. Through quiet alleys, we will climb to the very top of Glasgow to enjoy panoramic views. We will reach Glasgow Green – Britain's oldest park. We will walk along the Clyde River embankment, on which the city is situated. Along the way, I will tell you about Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who is associated with many architectural decisions in the city. At the end of the walk, you will see one of Glasgow's most famous monuments – the statue of the Duke of Wellington. You will learn of his connection to rubber boots and which wardrobe item the local residents 'gifted' him.
