About this experience
Not far from Bologna, there is a cozy medieval town surrounded by hills and magnificent vineyards. Join me on a tour and I will reveal it to you! You will learn why residents from neighboring villages came here to bathe and when the first frescoes appeared in Doccia. You will visit a 12th-century church, explore the castle-fortress, and see how people lived centuries ago.
What to expect
During the tour you will:
- Visit the medieval castle-fortress and explore its most interesting rooms: kitchen, laundry room, prison, living room, bedrooms, and armory.
- Climb the Big and Small Towers, which offer a breathtaking view of the hills near Bologna.
- Enter the church from the mid-12th century, named 'Ascension of the Most Holy Theotokos.'
- Get acquainted with the more than 200 frescoes in this fairytale town! Every two years, Doccia hosts an International Biennale with artists from all over the world.
If you wish, we will stop for a wine tasting of the Emilia-Romagna region at a famous wine shop on the way.
You will learn:
- Why the name 'Doccia' translates to 'soul'
- How people lived in the 15th century, including how they prepared food, washed clothes, and protected themselves from uninvited guests
- Why one of the castle towers is called 'Bolognese'
- Who the 'giants of Doccia' are - Franz, Angel, and Dragon
- What 'frescoes' are and when they first appeared in Doccia
