About this experience
You will get acquainted with one of the most famous sights of Tallinn - the palace and park ensemble Kadriorg. This place was named after the wife of Peter I, Catherine, and the palace itself is interesting because, unlike many other residences built by the emperor, it has preserved its original appearance, embodied by architects according to his design. I will tell you many interesting facts about the construction and landscaping of the park, and the highlight of the tour will be the story of Cinderella and her palace in Revel.
What to expect
'Catherine's Valley' - imperial gift
After the siege, the city of Revel capitulated and Russia gained access to the sea. The Northern War continued, and military ships sailed out of the harbor to achieve victory over the Swedes, now at sea. Not far from the city, construction of a summer residence began under the clay bluff. From the cliff, one could see the spires of the Old Town and the masts of warships. Here, in Fonnamehood, Peter the Great bought the lands of five manors to realize his vision. Later, he arrived with the architect Niccolo Michetti and determined 'where the chambers and the garden would be'. This place was named after Peter the Great's wife - Catherine I - Kadriorg, which in Estonian means 'Catherine's Valley'.
History of the construction and landscaping of Kadriorg
Today, the palace stands before us in all its glory. But over its 300-year history, it has seen a lot. You will hear about the times of neglect and prosperity of the park and the summer residence of the imperial personalities. You will see the 'small' palace in the grove near Revel. You will learn what Catherine the Great grew for her spouse in the garden, why an additional kitchen was built in the palace, where the beautiful statues that adorned the park's canals disappeared to, and why Kadriorg endeared itself to Peter. You will tour the modern residence of Estonia's president, visit the upper and lower gardens, stroll along the shady alleys to the Swan Pond, visit the Kadriorg Palace itself, which now houses an art museum, and definitely learn the story of Cinderella and her palace in Revel! The palace hosts a permanent exhibition dedicated to foreign art, which you will also explore.
Next year, the palace and park ensemble celebrates its 300th anniversary. Jubilee celebrations are already beginning, hurry!
