About this experience
Casablanca was so refined, so luxurious in the early 20th century! The waterfront promenades were filled with the colors of European and Moroccan aristocracy. It smelled of money and contraband, of luck and shattered hopes. And next to it, in the medina, life went on, with the centuries-old rhythm set by the muezzin's call. But there is another Casablanca - modern. On this excursion, you will discover all the facets of this amazing city.
What to Expect
In the streets, ladies showcased Parisian hats, gentlemen made deals. Donkeys carried cargo through narrow alleys, while charlatan doctors lured gullible crowds. That was Casablanca a century ago. And today it's much the same!
But there is another side. Nowadays, it's a city brimming with energy. It's a hub of street art and women's rights activism. Eco-projects operate in mosques, and Catholic nuns teach children programming. During the excursion, you will have the opportunity to travel through time and witness all these different lives:
- Start our city exploration by visiting the magnificent Hassan II Mosque. Learn about the role of religion in modern Morocco and why this mosque still stirs so much controversy.
- Climb the walls of the ancient fortress. This is the best place to try traditional delicacies and discuss the history of piracy, slave trade, local cuisine, and how it reflects the national character.
- Stroll through the old medina, perhaps the coziest in Morocco, untouched by tourist crowds.
- Visit the synagogue and delve into how two such different peoples have coexisted and helped each other for centuries.
- Wander through the picturesque Art Deco and Neo-Moorish architecture districts. Talk about the colonial period and its influence on Moroccan society.
- Of course, we will have an oyster and seafood tasting at the market.
- End the tour with a cup of tea near the pristine Sacré Coeur Cathedral, discussing how Morocco has become the most successful country on the continent (and beyond) in terms of innovation, economy, and social reform. And what it's like to be a resident of this country today.
