About this experience
We are heading to the town of Caprarola, the 'pearl' of which is the luxurious residence of Cardinal Farnese. Its walls have preserved rich interiors and unique frescoes excellently. We will visit the ceremonial halls, stroll through the picturesque garden, and finally swim in a volcanic lake. The trip will reveal curious details from the lives of the influential Farnese family and the Vatican!
What to Expect
Palace-Fortress
In contrast to Villa d'Este, from which the Austrians took away everything valuable, the Farnese residence was in private hands, which preserved its wealth. And this is a real treasure of the Renaissance! Unique frescoes created by the best artists of the 16th century adorn both the grand spiral staircase and the halls from floor to ceiling. We will admire the interior of the monumental pentagonal fortress and then take a walk in the beautiful garden.
You will learn the history of the influential Farnese family, from which not only cardinals and queens emerged, but also the mistress of Pope Alexander VI. And I will also tell you why the family coat of arms features French lilies.
In the Volcano Crater
Then we will visit Lake Vico. It is located at an altitude of 507 meters above sea level in the crater of the volcanic complex of Cimini. It looks mesmerizing! We will have lunch on the shore, and then if desired, we can swim.
