About this experience
The Spanish capital is not only a quiet historical center. After the 'must-see' sights, it's a special pleasure to discover the alternative, avant-garde part of the city hidden behind the monumental buildings of the central streets. This is where students, artists, designers, actors, and guests from all over the world enjoy life. A couple of hours in this whirlwind and you will understand why it's so easy to fall in love with Madrid at first sight.
What to expect
- We will meet you in the city center at Plaza Mayor, get acquainted, and start a walk through the non-touristic Madrid. I will tell you about local customs and habits based on my personal experience.
- The district where we will start is called La Latina. You can feel the real atmosphere of Madrid on the streets of this neighborhood! Locals love this place very much. Here you will find numerous bars, pubs, and charming traditional taverns on streets like Calle Cava Baja, Calle Cava Alta, or on squares like Plaza de la Cebada and Plaza La Paja. Although the atmosphere here is always vibrant, evenings and weekends are particularly lively. Also, every Sunday the famous open-air El Rastro market takes place on nearby streets.
- Equally picturesque is the adjacent Lavapies neighborhood. It used to have a bad reputation, but recently it has become a favorite place for the capital's bohemian crowd. People come here for typical products at traditional markets, for fresh juices and exotic cuisine, and also to join interest groups in the local cultural center, transformed from a tobacco factory.
- When you get tired of impressions, it's worth stopping for dinner at one of the locals' favorite restaurants or tapas bars, and then heading to the local bars where beer, sangria, music, and only a friendly creative crowd await. I will be happy to help you navigate the city and recommend where to go.
