What to expect
No trip to Paris is complete without a visit to Montmartre, and after my tour you will understand why this place always attracts tourists, locals and simply curious passers-by.
The tour will start at the most popular Parisian cabaret Moulin Rouge. The brilliant and simple idea—a quadrille, called 'French cancan', made this place a true tourist mecca. Since its opening, the renowned cabaret has been visited by a huge number of celebrities: from Queen Elizabeth to Liza Minnelli! And even Mikhail Baryshnikov has staged performances here.
Before us lies the hill of Montmartre with countless narrow streets (Street of the Crying Willows, Leandre Villa on Junot Boulevard, Tumanov Villa). At the dawn of the 20th century, Montmartre became a favorite place for artists thanks to its rustic charm, vineyards (one of which we can still see), the tiny cabaret 'Clever Rabbit', and of course—the amazing sunlight that artists cherished.
We will start a leisurely ascent of Montmartre and head towards one of the surviving windmills on the hill, Mulan Rade. Along the way, we will encounter a cafe where scenes from the beloved movie 'Amelie' were filmed, the interior of the establishment has hardly changed since filming, only posters and portraits of the main character, actress Audrey Tautou, have been added. We will also see the second windmill, Mulan de la Galette, built as far back as 1612!
Next, we will set out in search of the house of one of the most famous French singers—Dalida, which is practically impossible to find on a map. I will show you where the monument to the incredibly beautiful singer is located. Locals even say that touching the monument will bring happiness in love.
Just turn off the beaten tourist path, and another Montmartre will open up before us. Leandre Villa is a timeless place, in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. A small dead-end street between numbers 23 and 27 on Junot Boulevard, with its Anglo-Saxon style houses and cobbled street. Here we will see white houses with dark shutters, red brick houses in the modern style—the blending of styles creates an amazing harmony! The prevailing tranquility of this place is only occasionally interrupted by flashes of cameras from professional photographers and tourists.
Then we will meet a person who can walk through walls, a life given to him by the globally renowned actor Jean Marais! On the way, we will definitely pause for a moment in front of the Witch's Passage and the Witch's Stone, don't be surprised, Montmartre has such unusual attractions!
We will see the Tumanov Castle, where one of the great French Impressionists lived. Along the way, we will come across a square named after the Resistance heroine Suzanne Buisson. In the square stands a statue of the first Bishop of Paris, holding his own head in his hands. Why? You will find out!
Montmartre is famous for its vineyards, which I will definitely show you during our walk. And where there is wine, there is entertainment. The first Parisian cabaret 'Nimble Rabbit' is just a few steps away. I will tell you about the history of the establishment and why it got such a cheerful name.
On our way, we will encounter the oldest street in Montmartre, as well as Tertre Square. It was here that the world's first bistro appeared, the history of its emergence is interestingly connected with Russia. In the Middle Ages, public executions were held in the square, nowadays artists and cartoonists exhibit their works here for sale. If you wish, we will visit the Salvador Dali Museum, where his amazing and intriguing masterpieces await us.
Of course, we will not overlook the Sacre Coeur Basilica, you will learn about the history of its construction and the scandals associated with it. From here, from the viewing platform, we will admire the unforgettable panorama of Paris. And at the end of our tour, I will reveal to you the location of the Wall of Love, where love confessions in 311 languages are written. There is even a confession written in Braille font for the blind, and of course, the phrase 'I love you' in Russian.
I promise you that after our walk, you will definitely want to confess your love to the fairytale city of Paris!
