About this experience
This is a thematic tour, but it will be interesting to all guests of Porto, as our theme is the essence of this city and country! Azulejo: it's hard to imagine Portugal without this decoration, and I will tell you all about it. I will show you Porto through the eyes of an art historian. You will learn about the historical development, the technical aspects, and the artistic side of azulejo.
What to expect
Chronicles and uniqueness of azulejo
This ceramic tile is seen everywhere in Portugal: on the walls of houses, in city parks, churches, cafe and shop interiors. When and how did the tradition of facing buildings with azulejo emerge? Why is the white and blue tile so popular? Is it decoration or utility for the building? We will talk about all this and much more during the walk.
Bright corners of the city
Our journey will begin at the Materials Bank, where you will learn about the changing approaches to the production of azulejo over the centuries, and appreciate the variety of techniques and ornaments. Then we will walk through the bustling city streets and get acquainted with true masterpieces of azulejo in Porto: the Church of Du Carmo, Capela Das Almas, Sao Bento Station, and, of course, the Cathedral.
Organizational details
We will be walking a lot, so comfortable shoes are a must. Bring water and an umbrella with you (the weather in Porto is unpredictable).
