About this experience
This tour is dedicated to my heroes - outstanding individuals who have inscribed their names in the national memory. Physicists, oilmen, musicians, the wealthiest Muslim of tsarist Russia, and Caucasian Rastrelli - the streets of Baku bear memories of personalities without whom it would have been completely different! Following in their footsteps, you will see old buildings in a new light and discover the atmospheric corners of the city.
What to Expect
- At the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center, recognized as the best architectural structure in the world in 2014, we will talk about the national leader of the Azerbaijani people.
- On the most famous street in Baku, I will show you the old Eclectic-style building where the great physicist Lev Landau lived and tell you about his famous family.
- We will remember the feat of the legendary intelligence officer Richard Sorge at the Richard Sorge monument.
- You will hear about the wealthiest Muslim of tsarist Russia, the philanthropist and oilman Zeynalabdin Taghiyev. The imposing monument dedicated to him in the center of Baku has become a city decoration. We will also visit the building where Taghiyev lived, which now houses the Museum of the History of Azerbaijan.
- In addition, the program includes a visit to the White City, formerly the Black City. Here, in the beautiful Nizami Park, near the Villa Petrolea building, I will talk about the Nobel brothers and their invaluable contribution to Baku's oil history.
- We will stop at the house of the great musicians on Rostropovich Street and talk about the Bakuvian Mstislav Rostropovich.
- We will pay tribute to the memory of Heydar Aliyev and Muslim Magomayev at the Alley of Honor.
- You will learn about the Caucasian Rastrelli, as they called the chief architect of Baku, Josef Goslawski, near the house where he spent his last days.
- You will discover new names of those who stood at the origins of offshore oil production - engineer Pavel Pototsky and geologist Witold Zglenitsky.
- We will not overlook the Gusmanov family - I will show you the house where the famous residents of Baku lived.
Oilman Stefan Rylsky, actor Vladimir Menshov, art historian Vitaly Wolf - this is far from a complete list of famous Baku residents we will remember. They say: 'There are no former Baku residents!' And we remember them.
