About this experience
You could start getting to know my favorite city from Old Riga or the Cathedral, or from Alberta Street and Jugendstil. But I chose something else for you. We will start from an extraordinary place - Miera Street (translated from Latvian as 'peaceful'), whose restless residents, young, active, creative people, ready for action, demonstrations, and other revolutions of the spirit, have proclaimed it a creative Republic. I chose this district for your first acquaintance with Riga because the very idea of proclaiming a Republic on a particular street deserves attention. 'Green' lifestyle, street art, young, creative, and very friendly owners of cafes, shops, and workshops - this Riga will definitely appeal to you!
What to expect
I will show you all the most creative in the Republic, tell you about the place's concepts as a whole and of each spot in particular, and translate from Latvian (the young ones here don't all speak Russian).
The history of the Republic started with the last crisis, 3-4 years ago. That's when the fancy shops and expensive salons left the street, and gradually creative studios of artists, designer shops, and conceptual cafes started to appear in their place. And it's these places that I will be showing you.
- But on a walk along the unusual street, of course, we won't start from its geographic beginning. For me, it begins with the smell of chocolate wafting from the best chocolate factory in Latvia, with the rumble of a tram carrying relaxed passengers to the zoo, with the gray cobblestone, so uncharacteristic for modern cities, and, let it be - with a maternity hospital, from which we will start our small journey.
- Right across from it - a cute salon, where we will immediately pop in. Under one roof, there are seamstresses of a sewing workshop and enthusiasts of eco and ethnic design and recycling. Their motto is 'we sell what we like ourselves'. Among other things, you can buy eco clothing for yoga here.
- Next, we will visit the 'Bottle' workshop. Artists mold and blow objects out of ordinary glass jars. Glasses, vases, candle holders, and even clocks are created. Very cool!
- On the corner is the ceramics studio of Ieva Grase, who doesn't get bored herself and doesn't let children get bored - she teaches them her craft. We will observe them, and then here, in the yard, we will chat with the glass master, Marta Chibiete. Glass and ceramics are the strong points of Latvian designers, so the best souvenirs, stylish and light, created by real artists, can be bought right here. I will translate all your questions and requests into Latvian.
- Then we will visit vintage salons, where unique items from the past century are sold. Real happiness for lovers of design from the 50s-70s. In the costume rental 'Jacket and Dress' - we will arrange a retro-style photoshoot.
- And, of course, we cannot ignore the Laima factory - the most chocolatey of chocolatey. It's its smell that hovers over the street and evokes a feeling of complete satisfaction. We will visit the factory and, if desired, visit the chocolate museum, and in the local shop, we will purchase various goodies.
- At the end of our walk, we will have coffee or tea at one of the numerous cafes, and I will tell you about the peculiarities of Latvian cuisine and recommend where in Riga you can eat deliciously and have a great time.
This tour - allows you to get to know Riga through smells, tastes, and sounds. Through music, architecture, and cuisine. And the people of Riga - through their creativity. After a walk along Miera Street, you will understand that the capital of Latvia is a very creative and colorful city with open, friendly people.
