About this experience
Get ready to look at Samarkand as a work of art through the eyes of Uzbek artists, craftsmen, and architects. In one day you will see iconic landmarks, from the Gur-Emir mausoleum to the Siab bazaar. Practice Arabic calligraphy, meet masters, and explore the variety of painting and applied arts of Uzbekistan in galleries.
What to expect
Ancient city streets
On an overview walk through Samarkand, you will appreciate the splendor of Uzbek architecture - from unique decorative elements to the richness of facade shades. The program includes:
- Gur-Emir - a mausoleum where the great ruler Tamerlane is buried. This example of Moorish architecture is amazing both on the outside and inside.
- Registan - 'sand square', where three madrasahs of the 15-17th centuries, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, will appear before you.
- Bibi-Khanym - a majestic mosque of the 15th century, next to which we will visit the colorful and ancient Siab bazaar. Here you can find everything from Eastern spices to silk carpets!
Art in Samarkand galleries
- Aisel Gallery: we will visit an art gallery to get acquainted with artworks by Uzbek and foreign artists.
- Chorsu Gallery: in this art space, you will see works by the best artists of Uzbekistan, not only recognized masters but also modern young creators. Enjoy paintings, sculptures, painted pottery, and more.
- Happy Bird Craftsmen Center: in a caravanserai building from the past century, you will be surrounded by luxurious Uzbek carpets, clothing with national ornaments, authentic ceramics, jewelry, and Suzani embroidery. Here you can not only admire the beauty but also purchase products. You can also chat with masters and learn the secrets of their work.
Calligraphy master class
Arabic calligraphy is somewhere between a craft and true art. You will try to master it in a small master class: learn to notice details, practice 'handwriting posture,' and understand that text can not only be written but also drawn.
