About this experience
Samarkand, also known as Marakanda by the Greeks, boasts over 2750 years of history. There is much it has to tell about itself. Join me to admire the architectural masterpieces of medieval Eastern architecture, explore the Afrosiab archaeological site, and visit the museum where frescoes, ossuaries, bones, and other historical artifacts are preserved.
What to Expect
Afrosiab Museum of Samarkand History
The Afrosiab Frescoes are a rare specimen of Sogdian art. Discovered accidentally in 1965 during the construction of a road through the Afrosiab archaeological site, they are now preserved in the historical museum. Through the frescoes, you will learn about the daily life and traditions of the Sogdians who lived in Asia. I will also tell you about the ossuaries and rituals of this ancient people.
Maqbarat-o Darvazeh-ye Daniyal – Shrine of 3 Religions
Muslims, Christians, and Jews come here to pray. There are many legends associated with the tomb of Saint Daniel (Daniyar, Daniel). Some claim that his remains were brought to Samarkand by early Christians, while others believe they were ordered to be brought by Timur. You will find a spring here where you can make a wish and drink the holy water.
Shah-i-Zinda
This unique medieval necropolis in shades of blue represents a long narrow street. We will stroll along it and see the mausoleums of famous residents of 11th-15th century Samarkand.
Gur-e-Amir
The majestic mausoleum houses the tomb of Tamerlane, known for his conquests and the establishment of a strong state. The monumental building is awe-inspiring and even a bit overwhelming. It is believed that this ancient tomb served as a prototype for wonders of the world like the Taj Mahal and Humayun's Tomb. Gur-e-Amir is associated with many eerie legends, and I will make sure to share them with you.
Registan
In the heart of old Samarkand, we will encounter one of the most beautiful squares in the world. "The lofty facade reaching up to the sky – the duplicate of heavens, from the weight of the earth's spine comes to shuddering," when admiring Registan, these words from an ancient poem do not seem like an exaggeration at all.
