About this experience
In ancient Yerevan, seemingly incompatible city facets peacefully coexist. During the walk, you will see a monumental square from the Soviet era, hear the call to prayer in a mosque, delve into the city's slums resembling Brazilian favelas. And with my assistance, you will realize that this 'volatile mixture' creates a vibrant and unique image of Yerevan.
What to Expect
From Soviet buildings to merchant mansions
Immersion into the city environment will begin in the heart of Yerevan - in the Republic Square. You will uncover the secrets of the monumental ensemble from the Soviet era - hear the stories of its creation, filled with curious and funny incidents. Next, we will stroll along Abovyan Street - here you will find a piece of noble-merchant Yerevan, which surprisingly neighbors the modern Northern Avenue. Along the way, we will not forget to peek into the courtyards of old mansions from the late 19th century - with cozy surprises and the atmosphere of bygone eras.
Blue Mosque in Pink City
The Blue Mosque peculiarly fits into Yerevan's architectural space. We can step inside, admire the interior of the active mosque, hear the call to prayer, and take a walk around the adjacent area. I will share the story of why the mosque has survived to this day and stood firm when even Christian churches were being destroyed.
Kond - the spirit of underground Yerevan
The old, vibrant, and non-touristic Yerevan will appear before you in the Kond district. This is a real city within the city, concentrating informal places and corners of the underground that will transport you to the 18th century and show a new facet of Yerevan. We will wander through small streets, peek into courtyards with Eastern charm, see the church of St. Hovhannes saved by local residents, and discuss the issues of this ambiguous neighborhood. Moreover, in Kond, you will encounter another partially ruined mosque where Armenian refugees have settled. At the end of the walk, we will visit the hospitable native residents of Kond to exchange impressions about Yerevan over a cup of coffee or tea with Armenian sweets.
