Pärnu is unfairly forgotten. Most of it suffered during the war, but it retained its originality. Pärnu is different from any other city in Estonia, as it was strongly influenced by the Swedish. Nowhere else will you find such charming baroque architecture. During the tour, you will enjoy the beauty of its 'Swedish' streets, learn stories about its outstanding residents, and relax on the sandy beach. This new and unexpected side of Estonia will surely captivate you.
Program
- We will stroll through colorful parks, medieval 'Swedish' streets. I will tell you about the history of Pärnu, its unusual location, and how it influenced the city's economy and development. You will find out where renowned residents of Pärnu lived, such as jeweler Gustav Fabergé, lightning catcher Georg Richmann, and 'ambitious Russian Abyssinian' Abram Hannibal, known for his fortification designs.
- Next, we will find the lost 'Red' tower of the fortress wall (which is white) hidden in the courtyards and the proudly standing Tallinn Gate in the distance in baroque style (facing towards Riga).
- Leaving the gate, we will walk along the bastions built by Swedish fortifier – romantic Eric Dahlberg. There were 7 bastions, each named after open planets.
- But Pärnu is not only the Old Town but also a resort where politicians, poets, artists, and Soviet cosmonauts rested. Even Yuri Andropov improved his health here. The history of Pärnu as a resort is also fascinating. I will talk about its tourism and industrial activities. We will stroll along the coastal promenade, sunbathe on the soft sandy beach, swim in the warm sea, and have lunch at the popular pizza place 'Frog'.
- Having embraced the warmth of Pärnu and filled with impressions, we will head for home.
