About this experience
An hour's drive from Bari is a town that seems to have come straight out of a fairy tale. On a walk through the historic districts, you will visit a traditional 'trullo', discover the secret of stone construction without mortar, learn why structures were deliberately destroyed, see the whimsical church, and taste local sweets, liqueurs, and wines.
What to Expect
History of the wonder houses
As you explore the unique dome-roofed houses, 'trulli', you will learn how they were built without mortar to bind the stone blocks. You will discover the secret of their amazing durability and hear about why all the structures in the settlement were intentionally destroyed. I will tell you about ancient feudal times, the Acquaviva family and their tax tricks, peasant conspiracies, King Ferdinand IV's help, and the further development of Alberobello. As a result, the entire history of these unusual houses, which have become one of Apulia's landmarks, will unfold before you.
Modern Alberobello
After delving into the history of the colorful houses listed by UNESCO, you will learn what has become of them today, where people still live in trulli, and where they have been completely transformed into commercial spaces. You will see many charming souvenir shops, cafes, restaurants, and hotels. Along the way, I will recommend excellent establishments where you can try local products - traditional almond sweets, wines, and other drinks from southeastern Italy.
